CAMPUS

Campus Development

Blending seamlessly into the Santa Monica Mountains, Buckley is an exciting educational community with enhanced facilities that offer the most advanced educational technology. In 2012, the school opened a new Academic and Performing Arts Building (pictured above), followed by a new Mathematics and Science Building in 2013. These spaces include state-of-the-art music, theater, dance, and art classrooms, as well as a blackbox theatre, journalism classroom, digital arts and music center, and science classrooms with prep areas for labs. The campus also features ample playing fields, an indoor pool, and weight-room facility.

The school embarked on additional campus enhancements, including a new building that houses the Middle and Upper School library, a world languages lab, college counseling suite, and administrative offices. The school has also added a new admission office where prospective students and families are welcomed to campus. Buckley's Center for Community and the Arts, a multipurpose performance and assembly space, was completed in the fall of 2016 and functions as the heart of our campus.

HYDROPONICS AS A SOLUTION TO THE ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT

The ecological footprint is defined as the total ecologically productive area needed to produce the resources consumed by an average citizen of a given human community. In Mexico, there are six million hectares of irrigation and 15 or 16 million hectares of rainfall, so the productive frontier is very limited and traditional production systems are not enough to harvest what our country needs for food. In the face of this, there are emerging alternative systems that can help cover the deficit in food production in the country.

One such system is hydroponics, a form of production that does not need soil and therefore does not depend on weather phenomena, significantly reducing costs, facilitating off-season harvests, and providing high yields and high quality food. Hydroponics is the term that describes the different ways in which plants can be grown without soil. There are several excellent reasons for replacing the earth with a sterile medium, one such being immediately eliminating pests and diseases contained in the earth. Also, the work involved in plant care is significantly reduced. Some important features when growing plants in a landless environment are: it allows more plants in a limited amount of space, permits crops to mature faster, produces higher yields, conserves water and fertilizers, allows for greater control over the plants, and ensures greater uniformity and safer results.

The Green Team list of activities is constantly growing! We will start off this school year with the following selection of 25 ways that students can actively participate in caring for and learning about the natural environment.

Green team

The Green Team is a fun, ecologically oriented program in which students and staff are encouraged to participate. Green Team members, by way of a variety of different activities, learn to respect, care for, and value the natural environment.

Sustainability is not a trend or an add-on; it is not a marketing feature. It is, rather, a fundamental element of design for the future of our damaged society. It is an educational “essential” and must be integral in the education of all of our students and, in fact, our entire school community. At the American School, we have the fundamental responsibility of incorporating sustainability as a whole-school initiative, driven by a solid.

We are a multicultural educational community that inspires a passion for learning by nurturing creative citizens with principles, through critical thinking, research and collaboration.
